KCNA is CNCF’s foundational Kubernetes and cloud-native associate certification. It is currently a $250 online, proctored, 90-minute multiple-choice exam with no exam prerequisites.
Choose KCNA when you need conceptual grounding before moving into hands-on professional certifications such as CKA or CKAD.
Who Is KCNA For?
KCNA is designed for candidates building foundational understanding of Kubernetes and the wider cloud-native ecosystem. CNCF describes it as a pre-professional certification and a route toward further credentials such as CKA, CKAD and CKS.
KCNA is particularly useful if you understand cloud-native concepts but are not yet ready to solve practical cluster or application tasks under a performance-based exam.
What Are the Current KCNA Purchase Options?
KCNA currently costs $250 exam-only, $299 with Kubernetes and Cloud Native Essentials (LFS250), or $495 in the certification + THRIVE-ONE route. Choose by the preparation you will actually use, not by bundle size.
| Option | Current price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| KCNA exam only | $250 | You already understand the objectives and mainly need the credential. |
| KCNA + THRIVE-ONE Annual | $495 | You want broader annual cloud-native learning access. |
| LFS250 + KCNA | $299 | You want the focused Kubernetes and Cloud Native Essentials course plus the exam. |

What Does KCNA Cover?
CNCF’s current KCNA domains cover Kubernetes fundamentals, container orchestration, cloud-native application delivery and cloud-native architecture. The exam is conceptual rather than a hands-on command-line performance test.
Should You Start With KCNA or Jump Straight to CKA or CKAD?
You do not need KCNA before CKA or CKAD. The decision is about readiness. If you already administer clusters or develop Kubernetes applications professionally, the associate exam may add less value than moving directly to the role-specific hands-on credential. If your knowledge is still mostly conceptual, KCNA creates a structured foundation.
How Does the 2026 CARE Relationship Affect KCNA?
Under the current CARE program, achieving or recertifying CKA or CKAD on or after 1 January 2026 can renew or reinstate a previously earned KCNA and align its expiration date. Linux Foundation also describes a CKS cascade through CKA that can keep an eligible previously earned KCNA current.
