How Do Performance-Based and Multiple-Choice Exams Differ?

In a performance-based exam, you are asked to complete practical tasks in an exam environment rather than selecting answers from a list. That changes preparation: being able to recognize a command is not enough; you need to perform tasks accurately and efficiently.

KCNA is different. It is a proctored multiple-choice associate exam focused on conceptual cloud-native knowledge. That makes it more suitable as an entry point for candidates who are not yet ready for a hands-on Kubernetes administration or development exam.

What Should You Check Before Online Exam Day?

Before online exam day, confirm the official system check, one-display requirement, webcam and room setup, identification, reservation time and allowed resources for that certification. Run the checks early enough to fix a technical problem before the appointment.

1. Confirm the current official exam page. Verify the credential is active, the format and your eligibility window.
2. Read the current candidate handbook. Do not rely on a two-year-old blog post for ID, workspace or technical requirements.
3. Test the required technology in advance. Complete the provider’s current system checks before exam day.
4. Prepare the room and identification exactly as required. Remote proctoring still has controlled testing conditions.
5. Know what resources are permitted. Follow the current exam-specific rules, not community assumptions.
6. Leave scheduling margin. Do not wait until the end of the eligibility window if you can avoid it.

What Does 12-Month Exam Eligibility Mean?

Current Linux Foundation certification product pages commonly state that you have 12 months to schedule and take the exam after purchase. That is not the same as saying your certification lasts 12 months. The certifications covered here are currently shown as valid for two years after being awarded.

The current LFCA, LFCS, KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD and CKS product information shows two attempts under the standard purchase terms, meaning one retake after a non-pass where the standard policy applies. Leave enough time in the 12-month purchase window to receive the first result, repair weak areas and schedule the second attempt.
