The active certifications covered on this site are currently shown as valid for two years. To keep a certification current, Linux Foundation’s general rule is to retake and pass the certification exam before expiry, while CNCF CARE can create alternative maintenance relationships for certain cloud-native credentials.
Do not rely on older articles that still say three years for certifications achieved after the 2024 policy change.
How Long Are the Current Certifications Valid?
The active Linux Foundation and CNCF certifications covered here are currently shown with two-year validity after award. Renewal relationships can differ by credential, including 2026 CNCF CARE rules for some Kubernetes certifications.
| Certification | Current validity shown | Renewal note |
|---|---|---|
| LFCA | 2 years | From 1 Aug 2026, achieving or recertifying LFCS can renew or reinstate a previously earned LFCA under CARE. |
| LFCS | 2 years | No higher-level CARE renewal route is currently listed for LFCS; use the general recertification rule for LFCS itself. |
| KCNA | 2 years | From 1 Jan 2026, achieving or recertifying CKA or CKAD can renew or reinstate a previously earned KCNA. CKS can also cascade through CKA where CARE eligibility is met. |
| KCSA | 2 years | From 1 Jan 2026, achieving or recertifying CKS can renew or reinstate a previously earned KCSA. |
| CKA | 2 years | From 18 Jun 2026, achieving or recertifying CKS can renew or reinstate a previously earned CKA. |
| CKAD | 2 years | No higher-level CARE renewal route is currently listed for CKAD; use the general recertification rule for CKAD itself. |
| CKS | 2 years | No higher-level CARE renewal route is currently listed for CKS; use the general recertification rule for CKS itself. |
Why Are Older Three-Year Validity Answers Stale?
Linux Foundation changed certifications that previously used a 36-month period to 24 months for exams passed on or after April 1, 2024. Certifications earned before that cutoff retained their existing 36-month term.
When Should You Renew a Certification?
The general Certification FAQ says you can keep a certification current by retaking and passing the exam before it expires. For CNCF credentials, check CARE before purchasing a renewal because a related certification may change the most efficient route.
Which Certifications Can CARE Renew or Reinstate in 2026?
The current CARE program can renew or reinstate previously earned LFCA, KCNA, KCSA and CKA credentials when you achieve or recertify qualifying higher-level certifications. The current relationships are LFCS → LFCA from 1 August 2026, CKA or CKAD → KCNA from 1 January 2026, CKS → KCSA from 1 January 2026, and CKS → CKA from 18 June 2026; eligible expiration dates are aligned to the qualifying higher-level certification.
When Should You Set a Certification Renewal Reminder?
Do not wait until the final days of certification validity. You need preparation time, exam availability and room for a retake if your purchase includes one.
